Will Young joined by Anne Cox

Will Young, the former, pop idol, has restored his career to be the Musical Theatre darling thanks to his much spatted turn as the pervert Master of Ceremonies in the trophy winning Cabaret. The musical started to a full audience at the New Theatre in Oxford previous night and got a standing ovation in spite the traumatizing storyline which literally bares the advance of Nazism in pre war time in Berlin.

Will, his face more or less plastered with white colored panstick and polished in leather lederhosen, plays the spectators willkommen from O in the word before pulling back the drapes on decadent and depraved underworld of 30’s Berlin as well as its sordid nightclub scene.

Throughout the all knowing, all-seeing, all seeing nightclub presenter recounts with a satirist’s eye and a serial of now iconic songs penned by Fred Ebb and John Kander. The irrepressible Sally wows with Mein Herr. Most of the numbers are delivered in a skillful way by Will Young’s unpleasant Emcee and increasingly louche.

While Sally and Cliff world is all about hedonism and sex, the drama’s emotional heart shouts from a marvelously underplayed, but exceedingly obliging love story. The performances are beautifully forked out by all. Cliff of Matt Rawle could do with being better fleshed out but he is handsome, could carry a tune and execute what is asked of him.
